French, circa 1900. 5” x 2” (13 x 5 cm). Musical. A miniature wooden shipping crate is lettered Chocolat Menier on two sides and appears as a miniature model of the wooden shipping crate for the popular French chocolate. But inside the crate is not chocolate, but a miniature musical box that winds at the front, and plays upon opening the crate. Chocolat Menier created several very sought-after advertising pieces, some with musical boxes, at the end of the 19th century.
