"The European Collections" Marquis Antique Doll Auction.
From the time of America’s founding, there has been a traditional look toward Europe as a treasure trove of great art works and antiques.
From Thomas Jefferson to Andrew Carnegie, American persons of power or wealth imported wonderful art treasures to their homes in Virginia or Pittsburgh. Within the world of dolls, William Andrews Clark, the copper baron, and father of doll collector Huguette Clark, garnered the impressive collection of French art that formed the Corcoran Gallery in Washington. So it was little wonder that Huguette Clark, herself, would look to Europe for the doll treasures she so cherished. And she was not alone among doll collectors, who, to this very day, dream of the time they will make the journey and search for a doll with that special European flavor.
Yet, no need now. Because Theriault’s has brought Europe to you. Four exceptional collections, from Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Germany, appear in this one day auction, offering you the best of European dolls and toys without the trouble of travel there. The collection includes not only fabulous bisque dolls from the finest French and German firms, but also early wooden and paper mache dolls, a delightful collection of toy wooden and mohair animals (including, curiously, a very rare exhibition Schoenhut horse!), a collection of exceptional maitrise model doll furniture, very rare toy stoves, Christmas ephemera, and more. This is the European toy world of the 1700 and 1800s brought right to your doorstep here in historic Annapolis, Maryland.
There are more than 300 lots in the one-day auction. Bidders are welcome to attend the auction in person at Theriault’s new gallery located at 2148 Renard Court in Annapolis, Md, 21401. Attendance is limited - reserve seats today. Absentee, live telephone and live internet bidding are also available.

"Barbara" The Kincaid Collection Marquis Antique Doll Auction.
It should come as no surprise that when Barbara Kincaid retired from her librarian career, she retained her love of books.
Which led her to the works of 19th century novelist, Jane Austen, and, indeed, it is the highly stylized early cover of one of those novels, Emma, which has inspired the cover of this catalog of Barbara’s doll collection. Yet, as with all inquisitive minds, one thing leads to another. Barbara’s love of dolls intertwined with Jane Austen, but also meandered into the world of Alice in Wonderland of which she not only owns wonderful dolls (one of which bears the amusing original tag declaring “Curiouser and curiouser...now they’ve made me into a doll”), but also kindled her fascination with toy bunnies ranging from early velvets to paper mache candy containers.
Lest readers assume her collection focused only on Alice and bunnies, lend an eye to the extraordinary collection that lived on the shelves and crannies of every corner of her home and are presented in the May 21 auction. Standing next to Izannah Walker are elegant French bisque poupées. Little mignonettes nudge for their place next to their rare German art character cousins. Dolls with trousseaux and trunks were a favorite with Barbara, especially when accompanied by original provenance. American folk and cloth dolls, such as the rare Nina Albritton doll, find special place in the midst of all-original French bébés, protected by early Steiff Bully pups. There seems no lack of variety in this delightful collection, a reflection of the collector herself. Here is a small review of the hundreds of special dolls featured in this auction.
