color with interwoven narrow stripes of darker
green and cream, the gown features a fitted
bodice below a wide V-shaped collar that extends
to the waist, rounded neckline, pagoda sleeves,
triple-layered box-pleated skirt, invisible set-
in waistband, hook and thread closure at the
back, fully muslin lined including collar lining.
The gown is of couturier quality with intricate
construction and stitching details that belie the

Of a splendid crisp silk fabric in light brown
color with tiny interwoven checkered pattern of
muted purple, the costume features a box-pleated
skirt with reverse pleats at front panel and
double box pleats at the back and a hidden set-in
waist covered by a pleated purple sash from which
two long streamers cascade at each side. There
are two pleated purple silk ribbon suspenders and
the same purple silk ribbon edges the skirt
hemline. A very narrow black velvet ribbon edged
with cream stitching centers the purple sash and
suspenders, and three bands of the ribbon extend
around the skirt just above the hemline. The
costume is fully lined and is unquestionably
couturier made, although unsigned. Included is a
white fine muslin blouse with lace collar and

Of sturdy brown pique, with horizontal ribbing,
the dress features a rounded neckline above a
fitted bodice that is covered by wide scalloped
bretelles that fall into lappets below the waist;
the same bretelles are repeated on the back side
of the dress. The very full puffed sleeves are
formed by box pleats at top and bottom, and are
edged with narrow turned-up cuffs. There is a
hidden set-in waistband above the box-pleated
skirt that features reverse box pleats at the
center front and back and at each side. The gown
is trimmed with expertly appliquÙd black soutache
in an elaborate pattern along the bretelles,
bodice front, sleeve cuffs, and around the entire

uniquely S-shaped base of throat that pivots on
matching-shaped bisque shoulder plate according
to a system patented by Joliet. The doll has a
perfectly oval face with very full cheeks and
throat, high domed forehead, almond shaped cobalt
blue glass enamel inset eyes, thick dark eyeliner
encircling the eye sockets, heavily lidded eyes,
painted lashes, feathered brows, aquiline nose
with shaded nostrils, closed mouth with outlined
lips, impressed philtrum and lip corners,
unpierced nicely shaped ears, blonde mohair wig
over cork pate, kid fashion body with shapely
torso, gusset jointing at hips, knees and elbows,
stitched and separated fingers and toes. The doll
wears a fine muslin gown of patterned mauve
flowers and leaves, sous-sleeves, undergarments,
leather shoes, early straw bonnet. Marked ›10†on
shoulder plate. Circa 1867, from the original
patent filed by Nicolas Joliet. His patent
concerned a particular type of neck articulation
requiring the slanted, slightly curved bisque
neck cut that exactly fit the corresponding
shoulder plate.

leather miniature photograph album with gold leaf
edging and ormulu trim (clasp missing) contains
ten miniature photographs inside; three of the
photographs are of antique dolls and others are
of historic figures (two presumably Napoleon III
and Empress Eugenie). Circa 1867, the album was
probably prepared as a promotional object for the
1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris. A similar
miniature book labeled Album de La Poupee was
sold by the Parisian doll boutique Au Paradis des
Enfants at that time.

with rounded facial modeling on matching bisque
shoulder plate with complicated bisque locking
mechanism that allows the head only to turn from
side to side in a realistic manner (rather than
360 degrees as most dolls do); the head is
adhered with a jute string that is locked into
the cork pate. The doll has dark blue cobalt
enamel eyes, delicately painted lashes and brows,
accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth
with accented lips, unpierced ears, blonde mohair
wig over cork pate. Her body is French kid
fashion with shapely waist, gusset-jointing at
hips and knees, kid-over-wooden upper arms,
bisque forearms with exquisitely shaped and
painted fingers. The doll wears an early costume
comprising linen pinafore with handmade scalloped
edging, white cotton blouse, undergarments,
Charlotte bonnet, leather slippers. Marked ›F. 1
G.†in block letters on back shoulder plate.
Circa 1861, based upon the 1861 patent of
Adelaide Huret, the head was made in the
porcelain works of Francois Gaultier and bears
that companyŽs early signature.
