Two very different doll worlds mingle in a delightful mélange. There is, on the one hand, the sophisticated world of Parisian dolls, chic, fashionable, and French dolls from Paris store Au Nain Bleu. And then there is the world of plain and simple, highlighted by a collection of Ella Smith cloth dolls and Alabama babies. with painted teeth,glass enamel eyes. French,circa 1890. Excellent condition,perfectly sized for
display with small bebes or poupees,or mignonettes.
11" (28 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulder plate,blue glass enamel inset
eyes,painted lashes and brows,accented nostrils and eye corners,closed mouth with pert
smile,accented lips,pierced ears,brunette mohair wig over cork pate,French kid poupee body with
shapely torso,mitten hands with detached thumbs. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 3
(head,and artist red checkmarks) Jumeau Medaille d'Or Paris (body). Comments: Emile
Jumeau,circa 1880. Value Points: rare petite size with transitional poupee/bebe face has sweet
expression,original wig,pate,very sturdy signed body,original chemise and Jumeau earrings.
6" (15 cm.) chair. 10" armoire. Of pinewood with original robin's egg blue painted finish,the 7-
piece ensemble comprises mirrored armoire,table,two chairs with fancy spindled back and legs
and blue tufted silk upholstery,bed with silk upholstery,dressing table with white marble top,and
night stand with white marble top. Excellent condition. French,circa 1885,a rare petite size .
18" (46 cm.) Bisque socket head,brown glass sleep eyes,painted lashes,thick brush-stroked
brows,accented nostrils and eye corners,open mouth,shaded and accented lips,four porcelain
teeth,blonde mohair wig over plaster pate,composition and wooden ball-jointed body with adult
female shape. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: D made in Germany 8 162 (head) Germany
(body). Comments: Kestner,circa 1900,their composition bodied model of Gibson Girl or
Edwardian society lady. Value Points: all original doll including upswept wig,pate,body,body
1.5" (4 cm.) smallest pair. Comprising brown leather shoes,tan twill shoes in the French style
with silver beads marked "Made in Germany",French-type white kidskin shoes marked "1",and
tiny white kidskin shoes with silver beads. Very good/excellent condition. Circa 1890.
13" (33 cm.) Bisque shoulder head,sculpted short blonde curly hair with center forehead
curl,sculpted ears,cobalt blue glass enamel eyes,painted lashes,feathered brows,accented
nostrils,closed mouth with center accent line,blushed cheeks,muslin stitch-jointed body,bisque
hands. Condition: generally excellent,left thumb broken. Comments: Germany,circa 1885. Value
Points: wonderfully sculpted hair and rare glass eyes,original body and antique gentleman's
10" (25 cm.) doll. 16" x 12" trunk. A wooden-framed presentation box with decorative paper
wraps and engraving,hinges open to reveal well-fitted interior,comprising bisque doll with
brown glass sleep eyes,painted facial features,open mouth,four teeth,pierced ears,blonde
mohair wig,French composition and wooden fully-jointed body,and contents. Condition:
generally excellent. Marks: Dep 0. Comments: circa 1895,for the French market,the doll and
trousseau were likely prepared for a luxury boutique Etrennes gift. Value Points: in unplayed
with condition,the superb presentation includes six luxurious silk or woolen ensembles,each
with dress or coat and bonnet (one being an unusual Pierrette costume and including a
bisque-headed miniature marotte); a hidden lower level presents six undergarments,a
porcelain wash set,and two glass-topped boxes with 12 miniature accessories including
perfume,soap,brushes,fingerless gloves,and more.
