Standing upon a wooden base with painted finish is a carved wooden soldier with parade drum and batons, he with carved and well-defined uniform and helmet, painted facial features and moustache. When wound, he waves his arms up and down as though beating the drum. Condition: generally excellent, rifle tip at side of costume missing. Comments: French, early 1800s. Value Points: rare early simple toy with well-preserved original finish and charming action; the toy is shown in The Encyclopedia of French Dolls by Theimer, page 123.
