Early Paper Mache Doll in Shell Costume for the French Market

7" (18 cm.) Paper mache shoulderhead, sculpted black hair drawn into a chignon, painted facial features, wooden lower limbs. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: for the French market, circa 1860, the doll was costumed in seaside towns along the French coast, one aspect of the artisanal craft utilizing the variety of tiny shells that could be found. Value Points: the doll is wearing superb original shell costume in a variety of colors and shapes, and is preserved under original glass dome.
