Extremely Rare American Carved Wooden Exhibition Clown by Schoenhut

34" (86 cm.) Carved wooden socket head with bald pate, painted white clown complexion with painted facial features, wide smile, red and black painted clown decorations on face, wooden torso, wooden arms jointed at shoulders with attached wooden gloved hands, wooden legs with hinge-jointing at hips to allow seated pose, wooden painted red shoes on feet, wearing black and white clown costume and cap which appears original. Condition: generally excellent, original finish overall with small paint restoration on forehead. Comments: Schoenhut, circa 1910, the very rare exhibition clown was created on commission for toy stores as promotion for the firm's Humpty Dumpty Circus and very few are known to exist.
