French Bisque Poupee in Original Folklore Costume of Sables d'Olonne, France

Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulderplate, blue glass inset eyes, painted lashes and brows, closed mouth, pierced ears, brunette mohair wig over cork pate, original muslin poupee body with kid arms. Condition: generally excellent, some wear to fingers. Marks: 0 (head and shoulder). Comments: French, circa 1885, wearing original costume of the French village of Sables d'Olonne; the boutique of Mon. Bellanger of that village specialized in presenting dolls costumed precisely in traditional garb. Value Points: all original, the multi-layered costume is highlighted by an elaborate two-layer coiffe. The doll appeared in the book, French Dolls in Folklore Costume, by Florence Theriault, page 80.
