Madame Alexander, The Rodney Waller Collection: Part Two
Time has come for Beatrice Alexander, signature American dollmaker and designer, to take her rightful place among antique dolls. Nearly 90 years have passed since her dolls first appeared, and for more than a half century she stood as a symbol of excellence, ingenuity, and marketing mastery in the world of American dolls. Collector Rodney Waller noted this many years ago, and began a quest to find the rarest of the rarest of her dolls, prizing originality and excellence of condition as well as rarity. This is Session II of his two-part auction, featuring the mid-century dolls, 1948-1970, of Madame Alexander. Softbound. 8.5" x 11". 208 pages.
12" (30 cm.) Tosca wig in elaborate neat coiffure with rolled chignon at her crown accented with a rose satin ribbon and rolled curls at the nape. Wearing tagged pink and white checkered gown under white pinafore with eyelet trimmed lace, cotton petticoat and pantalets with matching lace trim, socks, black side-snap shoes, brooch. Near mint condition. Alexander, 1962, with original booklet, box stamped "Meg 1225".
18" (46 cm.) Silk and cotton dark blond upswept hairstyle in elegant double chignon. Wearing tagged pink satin off the shoulder gown with dropped waist, accented with gold sequins, taffeta petticoat, panties, early net hose with pink satin shoes, long black lace gloves and matching pink reticule with sequin detail. Near mint condition. Alexander, No. 6023, 1951, from the "Fashion of a Century" series, with original box and cloverleaf hang tag. Created for the Mid-Century Exposition of 1950, She features exceptionally high cheek color with a porcelain facial finish, and is in superb flawless state of preservation.
18" (46 cm.) Sophisticated braided silk and cotton auburn upswept hairstyle. Wearing tagged blue satin ensemble representing a turn of the century gown with ruffled skirt detail and floral garland accent on gown's bodice, taffeta slip, panties, early net hose with gold foil shoes, and rare pink feather fan attached to wrist by blue satin ribbon. Near mint condition. Alexander, model 6018, 1951, with original box and original cloverleaf hang tag, from the "Fashion of a Century" series, created for the Mid-Century Exposition of 1950, an exceptionally rare example that is perfectly-preserved, with exceptional high cheek color on the beautiful porcelain facial finish.
15" (38 cm.) Cascading curled floss brunette wig with a floral headpiece. Wearing tagged multi-tiered white organdy ruffled gown, attached slip, and matching panties, long ribbed knit white stockings, white side-strap shoes with floral detail and Story Princess wand attached by blue satin ribbon. Near mint condition. Alexander, 1948, the model was based on the Arlene Dalton Chapin character of "Story Princess" for KSL radio program and later for a children's TV program based in New York City. This particular variation was a 1000 doll custom store order from ZCMI of Salt Lake City and includes her custom gold store booklet and original store gold box with Alexander Doll Company label on inside of the box lid.
18" (46 cm.) Blonde floss wig curled atop her head with rose accents. Wearing tagged elaborate white tutu of satin and pleated organdy with floral and silver rick-rack trim accents, attached stiff underskirt and separate slip attached to panty, bead necklace, and pink slippers. Near mint, with original box and "Nina Ballerina" clover wrist tag. Alexander, 1950, rare example of a Madame Alexander (Madam) label and box without the "e."
20" (51 cm.) Dark blonde wig in pageboy hairstyle. Wearing tagged lilac organdy shirtwaist dress with yellow bow, yellow sash with corsage accent and puffed, three-quarter sleeves, taffeta slip and panties, hose and lilac heels with matching insole. Doll is generally excellent, costume near mint. Alexander, model 2214, 1958, with original box. The rare model was offered in two color variations, this is the more difficult to find, and has bright, crisp colors, exceptional hat with coordinating flowers.
8" (20 cm.) Bent knee walker body, brunette wig with tiara. Wearing tagged golden yellow taffeta gown trimmed with white rosebuds, long slip of tulle and taffeta, panties, socks, gold foil shoes with ties. Near mint doll with rosy cheeks. Alexander, with Wendy wrist tag, model 623, 1956, vibrant, crisp gown with elegant feature of tulle and taffeta slip.
8" (20 cm.) Straight leg non-walker body, tosca wig, wearing tagged yellow organdy dress, pastel lavender pinafore, slip, panties, socks, side-snap shoes, stiffened lace hairpiece with floral accents. Near mint with bright rosy cheeks. Alexander, 1953, very rare model, few other examples are known to exist.
18" (46 cm.) Dark blonde mohair wig in soft, cascading curls and a beautiful complexion. Wearing tagged pale yellow sheer nylon full-length gown over yellow taffeta with lace trim and collar, yellow satin sash and bonnet streamers, wide-brimmed straw bonnet; bouquets of rose buds at her waist and decorating the bonnet, net hoop petticoat with taffeta panties, ribbed knit socks, black side-snap shoes with fabric bows. Near mint. Alexander, 1949, with especially lovely complexion, coiffure and costuming.
12" (30 cm.) All hard plastic, blue sleep eyes, blonde mohair bobbed wig. Wearing tagged ivory satin lace-edged shirt and shorts, socks, laced leatherette shoes, and carrying an ivory satin pillow with "diamond" ring. Near mint, with original box marked "Ring Bearer" and cloverleaf hang tag. Alexander, 1950, an endearing representation of the mid-century concept of "the wedding party."
