Miles to Go, Promises to Keep — Featuring the Prestige Collection of Mary Lou Rubright of Shoemakersville, Pennsylvania
Monday, July 22, 2019 — Inspired by the Robert Frost poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”, Theriault’s offers another exceptional private collection of antique dolls carefully gathered by Mary Lou Rubright of Shoemakersville, Pennsylvania during the late 1970s and 1980s. The unflagging zest of the octogenarian, for whom it should seem a little nap might be inviting, evokes the line from that famous poem “But I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep”. It was that enthusiastic zeal that still instructs her life which gave her purpose to seek and acquire fine dolls. Mary Lou recalls that she never had store dolls as a child, rather “we usually made cloth dolls out of cast off pieces of clothing”. So, in 1975, when she discovered other dolls, she set off, with daughter Tammy in tow (the team dubbed “Mother Goose and Me”) in ardent pursuit. Now, nearly a half century later, the dolls beautifully preserved throughout that time. Mary Lou has determined to share her dolls with others, declaring “we send our love with each doll”.
