A hand rubbed pine wood case with elaborate raised pyramid design and parquetry border, hinges open to reveal a mercury- silvered mirror on the inside lid, a silk pillow that lays over the sewing tools, and a velvet base with recessed designs to accommodate the shape of the various sewing tools. The mother-of-pearl tools include a scissors with gold filigree designs, stitch-picker with tortoiseshell, thimble, spool holders, needle-threader, button holders. There is a floral designed pin pincushion and a cut glass scent bottle. The sewing tray can be removed to reveal the musical box and extra storage hidden below. The two-melody musical box is an early sectional-comb miniature unit that is activated by mother-of- pearl knobs on the case exterior. The musical comb has twenty sections, 3-teeth per section, and 2 3/8_ cylinder. The comb and cylinder pinning are in superb, original condition, and the melodies are bright and sprightly. Similar luxury necessaries were offered by Parisian firms such as Palais Royale of Paris, created under their commissioned design, and the music box is likely Swiss. The necessaire de voyage was designed to accompany elegant ladies on their travels. Circa 1815. 6 3/4"L. x 5"D. x 3"H.
