14" (36 cm.) Sculpted porcelain shoulderhead of the 16th century British queen, Elizabeth I, with slender elongated face, angular facial features, brown sculpted hair in tightly-arranged curls under a gilt coronet which frames the entire hair and is surmounted by white beading, emerald at her center crown, heavily-lidded painted side-glancing eyes, strong nose and jaw, blushed cheeks, cloth body, porcelain lower arms and legs, painted blue slippers, wearing original couturier costume by Martha Yeske for Martha Thompson of silk brocade accented with faux rubies and emeralds. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: '56 Elizabeth I M.D.T. Comments: Martha Thompson, 1951, from her series of British historic royalty. Value Points: very rare portrait doll by the celebrated American early artist with outstanding detail of hair, exacting portraiture of face. The collection of Martha Thompson dolls in this auction have been in the collection of one owner for nearly 60 years, acquired directly from Connecticut couturier, Martha Yeske, who formed a relationship with Martha Thompson in the mid-1950s, and was commissioned to create costumes for the Thompson dolls. Several vintage articles about their relationship are included with the doll.
