Lot Number:

6" (15 cm.) Each is all-bisque with sculpted hair and swivel head, painted facial features, loop-jointed limbs, painted brown ankle boots. Including Max with bobbed black hair defined by feathering, blue left side-glancing eyes, beaming thin-line smile; and Moritz with exuberantly-modeled reddish topknot and side wing curls, blue right-glancing googly eyes, very full smiling lips. Condition: generally excellent, few rubs on Max's hair. Marks: 210 (arms and legs). Comments: Kestner circa 1915, the models were based on the characters Max and Moritz from the 19th century children's books of Wilhelm Busch, and re-popularized in the early 20th century American comic strip, The Katzenjammer Kids. Value Points: amazingly accurate depiction of the devilish imps in this rare-to-find rendition; the fine detail extends to expressively pointing fingers.
