Rare French Bisque"Poupee a Surprise" By Leon Casimir Bru

14" (36 cm.) A bisque head with flanged neck on bisque shoulder plate has a different face on the front or back of the head,which can be revealed simply by pivoting the head. One face reveals a doll,red-faced from crying,with painted squinting eyes,painted lashes and brows,closed mouth with shaded and outlined detail; and the other face reveals a lovely smiling face with delicate complexion,blue painted eyes with white eyedots,painted lashes,accented nostrils,closed mouth with smiling expression; on Bru kid poupee body with square cut collarette,gusset-jointing,wooden arms with dowel-jointing at shoulders,elbows and wrists. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Leon Casimir Bru who deposed the model in 1867; the unusual flanged neck could be found with or without a painted coral necklace. The doll is written about in The Bru Book by Theimer,page 17. Value Points: rare model with very fine modeling,original body with rarer wooden arms,lovely antique costume.
