26" (66 cm.) x 34" framed. An oil-painting on board depicts a well-detailed vividly colorful French carnival scene, with various bazaar tents in the background around which are thronged many onlookers, while a French flag merrily waves. In the foreground is a table piled with prizes alongside a large Polichinelle into which two older children are tossing balls into its open mouth, while two younger children anxiously stand by. There is some very minor paint flaking, but overall excellent. French, late 19th century, unsigned, in the manner of the famed artist Chocarne-Moreau.

Seated upon a velvet covered base is a bisque head lady with large blue glass paperweight inset eyes, painted features, closed mouth, pierced ears, brunette mohair wig, bisque shoulder plate with shapely bosom, lady-shaped torso and long slender legs posed crossed at the knees, hinged right hip, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, wearing wonderful party costume of silk and lace, and holding a tambourine in right hand, and lace-edged black party mask in her left hand. When wound, music plays, her head turns in a circular motion, and she lifts her left hand with tambourine as though shaking it, then lifting the mask, while her right leg taps. Condition: chip in bisque at right elbow, one finger reglued, mechanism functions wonderfully. Marks: L.B. (key). Paper label with two tunes on base including "Carmen Chanson du Toreodor" and "Victoria Valse". Comments: Leopold Labert, circa 1880. Value Points: luxury automaton enhanced by portrait face, lavish costume and wonderful details of accessories and costume.

31" (79 cm.) Standing upon a fabric-covered wooden base is a black-complexioned paper mache man with highly characterized features, brown glass eyes with leather eyelids, broad nose, very full lips with hidden hinge at lower lip, double row of teeth, black fleecy hair, slender carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, and paper mache hands posed to hold the banjo. When wound, he moves his head in a complicated manner, his lower lip opens and closes, eyelids open and close, and he strums the banjo, while musical tunes play. Condition: some rubbing on complexion of face and hands, mechanism functions well. Comments: Vichy, circa 1890, the automaton, deposed by Gustav Vichy, appeared as model 410 in the Vichy catalog. Value Points: the luxury automaton has wonderful details of mouth and eyelids, and is wearing fine original costume.
