172 . Pair, Composition "Little Betty" Dolls as Peasant Boy and Girl with Rare Iris Halsey Lumia Label, Original Boxes
21" (53 cm.) All composition with socket head, brown sleep eyes, real lashes, smokey-grey eyelids and eyeshadow, unique painting of lashes, brushstroked brows, closed mouth with very full bow-shaped red lips, auburn hair in original coiffure with elaborate upsweep that is draped with turquoise beads, jointing at shoulders and hips, slender limbs. She is wearing rose brocade gown with shapely bodice given form by sewn-in metal bosom, pleated shoulder fans and very full skirt and with decorative purple velvet streamer with garland of flowers and draped turquoise beads, satin petticoat and panties, burgundy shoes with ankle straps, fingerless gloves, turquoise earrings, beaded bracelet, and holding a bouquet of flowers. Very good/excellent, some fading of complexion, very light lines. Madame Alexander, 1946, with original clover-leaf wrist tag, from her Portrait Series of that year, the doll's insouciant expression surely inspired by the Oscar Wilde play "Lady Windermere's Fan" which was notable for such memorable lines as "I can resist anything except temptation" and which had remained popular in screen and theatre for decades.
